Eloping in Banff National Park: Why Bow Lake & Peyto Lake Are the Perfect Combination
If you’re dreaming of an intimate mountain wedding in Banff National Park, there are countless incredible locations to choose from. But if you asked me to recommend just one combination that truly showcases the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, my answer would always be Bow Lake and Peyto Lake.
These two iconic locations complement each other perfectly, giving you an elopement experience that feels adventurous, romantic, and incredibly diverse—all without requiring hours of hiking or multiple days of exploring.
Whether you’re planning a just-the-two-of-you adventure or an intimate ceremony with your closest family and friends, here’s why Bow Lake and Peyto Lake deserve to be at the top of your list.

Why Choose Both Bow Lake & Peyto Lake?
One of the biggest advantages of combining these two locations is that you truly get the best of everything.
Peyto Lake offers those dramatic mountain-top views that people travel across the world to see. Standing high above the vibrant turquoise lake surrounded by endless peaks feels like you’re on top of the world.
Just a short drive away, Bow Lake offers something completely different. Here you’ll find peaceful shoreline views, beautiful mountain reflections, rocky beaches, and alpine meadows that create an entirely different atmosphere for your portraits.
Instead of having every photo look similar, your gallery tells a much richer story by featuring two completely unique landscapes.
Guest Limits
Banff National Park has regulations regarding ceremonies held within the park.
The maximum guest limit is 20 people (including the couple and vendors). You can read the current Parks Canada regulations here:

That said, I personally find these locations are at their best with 10 guests or fewer.
Smaller groups move more easily between locations, create a more intimate atmosphere, and allow us to explore without feeling rushed.
Best Time of Year
The ideal season for Bow Lake and Peyto Lake is: June through November
During these months the roads are fully accessible, the lakes are free of snow, and the hiking trail to Peyto Lake is usually open.
Bow Lake remains somewhat accessible during the winter months, but Peyto Lake becomes much more difficult once significant snowfall arrives. The viewpoint requires hiking, and deep snow can make access challenging or even impossible depending on conditions.
If your heart is set on these locations, I strongly recommend planning between June and November.
Accessibility
Peyto Lake
Peyto Lake requires approximately a 20-minute moderate hike to reach the viewpoint. For most couples, this hike is very manageable—even in a wedding dress. I recommend:
- Comfortable hiking shoes for the walk
- Changing into your wedding shoes once we reach the viewpoint
- Leaving heels behind until you’re ready for portraits
If you or one of your guests has mobility limitations or difficulty walking uphill, Peyto Lake may not be the best ceremony location.
Bow Lake
Bow Lake couldn’t be easier to access. The shoreline is only a short walk from the parking lot, making it ideal for:
- Elderly family members
- Guests with mobility challenges
- Larger groups
- Couples wanting a relaxed experience
One added bonus is the nearby Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, which offers accommodation right on Bow Lake. If staying there interests you, don’t wait too long—it is incredibly popular, books up quickly, and is one of the more premium accommodation options in the park.
How Far Are Bow Lake & Peyto Lake?
One of the reasons I love recommending these locations is that they’re surprisingly accessible.

Because both locations are along the Icefields Parkway, it’s very easy to visit both during the same elopement.
After your ceremony and portraits, you’ll have plenty of time to return to Banff or Canmore for a celebratory dinner—or if you’re planning a sunrise elopement, head back for a well-earned brunch.
Sunrise or Sunset?
Without question, my favourite time for these locations is sunrise.
Early mornings offer:
- Far fewer visitors
- Easier parking
- More privacy
- Soft, beautiful light
- A peaceful atmosphere that’s hard to beat
Sunset is also a fantastic option and photographs beautifully.
The one time I generally recommend avoiding is midday. These locations become incredibly busy during peak summer months, making parking and privacy much more difficult.If midday is your only option, I highly recommend hiring private transportation for yourselves, your guests, and your vendors. This removes the stress of finding parking and keeps your day running smoothly.
How Much Photography Coverage Do You Need?
For a ceremony at one lake followed by portraits at both Bow Lake and Peyto Lake, I typically recommend: 3–4 hours of coverage
This provides plenty of time for:
- Ceremony
- Family photographs (if applicable)
- Couple portraits
- Travel between locations
- Time to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed
If you’d also like:

- First dance
- Speeches

Simple Ways to Celebrate
One of the best things about an elopement is that the day can be completely your own.
Here are a few simple ideas that photograph beautifully:
- Bring a small cutting cake
- Pack a mountain picnic
- Share a bottle of bubbly for a celebratory toast
- Bring a portable speaker and enjoy your first dance overlooking the mountains
- Slow down and simply soak in the views together
Sometimes it’s these quiet moments that become the most meaningful memories of the entire day.
